Wednesday drawing
Can you tell I’m really enjoying drawing intricate illustrations and designs at the moment?
Pen and ink on paper, with pencil shading. Some dangles have crept in at the top, a touch I rather like.
I meant to leave some space to add a quote or inspirational word, but got so engrossed in the dangles that I forgot!

Monday motivation
I had a lovely, artsy, creative, relaxing time drawing the bottom design for this quote yesterday evening and this morning. It’s kind of a throwback to when I started drawing this kind of intricate art before I started doing all the work for colouring books, where the images have to be a fair bit less complex.
Unipin pens from Uniball, along with a blue-grey coloured pencil and a blender pencil from Derwent were the tools I used to create this.
I didn’t hand-letter the quote; I chose to use Serif’s Affinity Designer to add it instead, though I’ve not worked out how to get the text to follow a curve…yet. I will.
The quote is something I try to apply in my life. I’ve struggled with being a hyper-perfectionist all my life; learning to accept that something I produce is ‘good enough’ is something that is easier for me, though still not easy.
I cringe when I look back on earlier work.
Recently, I was approached by a lovely lady about using some old artwork of mine for her business branding logos and so on. I looked at it and knew I just had to re-work it; I recognised that my skills and style have developed and evolved a little, and I wanted to do the best I could now.
She seems to be really happy with the artwork, and I’m much happier with it too.
It’s not just in art that these words have meaning though.
It’s no secret that I am working in therapy (EMDR) at healing what I can from the CPTSD I’ve experienced all my life, especially the way it limits my life. Learning to accept that I’m good enough as a person is very difficult. Progress is slow, but it is progress.

A monogram
Carrying on my theme of playing with ideas and paper and pen, I decided to do a monogram, and here’s the result.
If I’d thought ahead and either made this smaller or made the paper bigger, I could’ve added dangles to it.
I’m not at all sure of the coloured patterns I added around the outside of the monogram display; I didn’t choose some of the colours wisely. I do like the subtle grey “feathers” there though.
I also think I may need to thicken the outlines of the letter and/or create shadows on the design behind the letter so it looks like it’s standing a bit proud of the design.
All the same, I’m enjoying creating and exploring and experimenting with my art again, and it definitely gets the #weekendvibes going!

A little cattitude
A couple of quick (ish) drawings of kitties, the first I’ve done since I said goodbye to my companion puss of 16 years a few weeks ago. So, they’re both white as he was pure white.
Often, all anyone would see of him was his backside while I was Skype-ing with them. Sometimes his cute pink nose pressed up to the screen.
He sure left a lot of deep paw prints of love on my heart. He was one unique kittycat for sure.

Dangle Day Saturday
Today I finished the editing for Entangled Butterflies; all I have to do is complete the coloured images when we’ve decided which ones are to be coloured.
I haven’t drawn a dangle design for a little while, so thought I’d combine my hand lettering of quotes and inspirational words with a dangle (or five). And here it is.

A Dangle A Day
As it’s WIP Wednesday, I thought I’d share the cover of my current work in progress – A Dangle A Day. It’s all about drawing dangles and stuff the Angela Porter way. I’m doing all the illustrations plus the writing too! It’s not a colouring book, it’s a tutorial book. There’s going to be a little bit in it about BuJos (bullet journals) too!

Mixed media cards – shells and fish
Over the past few days I’ve been drawing shells, flowers, fish and fungi and sorting them out to be digi-stamps, work all done on my Microsoft Surface Book. Some have been printed, coloured using my Chameleon Color Tones and Color Tops pens, cut out and mounted on mixed media backgrounds. The photos above show the fruits of my labours.
Apart from the Chameleon markers, the media I have used are:
- Distress and Distress Oxide inks
- Iridescent and metallic paints from Liquitex and Pebeo.
- Perfect pearls sprays
- Stencils
- Stamps
- Black Archival Ink
- Inktense pencils
- 3D Crystal Lacquer
- Alchemy Wax
I think that’s the complete list of media. I used mixed media paper for the backgrounds, and the paper was cut out using rectangular dies. Behind the backgrounds, I used silver mirriboard as a mat.
I’m quite pleased with them. No so sure about the kraft card bases (which are 5¾” x 4″ in size), but they were what I had.
Now, all I have to do is work out a price for them and pop them into my Etsy shop, though I think I will have to take better photos for that!

Six small tiles
I’ve completed the six tiles I cut from a single piece of mixed-media paper that I had coloured using Distress Oxide inks.
Next, I used Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens to draw the designs and add the patterns on each tile.
To add depth to the designs, I used Inktense pencils and Faber-Castell’s Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils with a water brush.
Finally, I used either iridescent/metallic watercolour paints or a metallic gel pen to add some shimmering, shining details to each.
I really enjoyed doing these; again, they’re a little different to a lot of the work I’ve done for colouring books, so it’s nice to explore different ways of creating.
The thicker black lines I’m using at this time mean my art reminds me a little of stained glass and also of lino cuts. I do like the very bold lines; it almost seems like I’m making a statement.
Art is the Adventure
