Sketchbook / Journal Pages

Sakura white, metallic and starlight gelly roll pens in a black Sakura journal/sketchbook. I had a lovely few hours last night, sat in bed, settling down for a good sleep.

What you can’t see in the photos is how the matt white and shiny blue/green inks create interesting weirdness visually. By weirdness, I mean a strange kind of 3D effect that I can’t put into words. That was totally unexpected.

I haven’t decided what to do with these pages yet. Will I fill them in completely with colour/pattern, or will I leave the pages as they are. If I leave them as they are then they can be used for journaling, writing, and I quite like that idea to be honest. As the writing is likely to be very personal, I’m not likely to share that, but maybe I’ll mock something up digitally, see for myself what it’s like and then decide.

And with that last sentence, I may scan these in and use them as templates for a digital journal, which would then take away my worries about making a mess of the page by writing on it!

Of course, they’d work quite nicely as frames for quotes too.

Too many possibilities!

Whatever I decide to do – and it may be all of these things – there is something satisfying about working with shimmer and shine and the contrast with the matt white ink on black. The sparkle and shine makes my arty soul rather happy.

Just a note on the black Sakura sketchbook / notebook /journal. I like it! It has a LOT of pages in it of acid-free, sturdy enough, smooth paper.

Copper Mandala

Another mandala resulting from my playing around with metallic textures and drawing to reveal the lovely shininess.

I know I got to the outer circle of the design and just felt the need to draw wiggly lines, like wires, connecting the mandala to everything outside of it, whatever that means.

These are fun to do. Mind you, I say that about all my art! And a bit of sparkle and shine is always welcome!

As a little bit of an aside, this weekend I added two coloring templates to the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group for the exclusive use of members. One is the ‘Noel’ design I posted previously, the other is a design for 2019.

With the new year design, I’ve asked that those who colour it (or another template if they have no access to printers) as close to midnight between 2018 and 2019 at their local time as they can. It will be lovely to see a flurry of colour throughout the day as the world gradually moves into 2019.

Mixed media index cards – 5 June 2017; my own library of digital drawings

Mixed media index cards

Two index cards worked on over the last day or two.  The focal points are shells I drew, first on paper, then the image was worked on on my Surface book with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and my Surface Pen,

I had to use scissors to cut out the shells (not my favourite task as I’m not good with scissors) after I’d coloured them using the Chameleon Color Tones and Color Tops marker pens.  I’m really pleased with the colouring.

Lots of different techniques/media were used on the index cards – stamping, stenciling, inktense pencils, distress inks and distress oxide inks, pebeo dyna paints, perfect pearls sprays, gesso, clear holographic embossing powder from WOW!

I’m happy with them, though I’m not sure they’re quite finished, especially the little one.

Digital drawing library

I’m beginning to build up a library of my own digital drawings – fungi, flowers, shells at the moment, oh and one angler fish skeleton that I’ve not used yet (but that’s an idea for later or tomorrow maybe).

I have to decide if I put these images together as packs of ‘digi-stamps’ for sale…I’m really pleased with my shells here, but the fungi have worked out fine too.  With my limited scissor skills, I’m keeping it in mind I need to keep the outlines relatively simple, but the inside of the design can be rather detailed, which is fun.

Stay Strong – Mixed Media, now completed

StayStrong_Finished_2May2017_AngelaPorter

Yesterday, I posted a picture of this mixed media work.  I thought it was most probably finished,  However, as I looked at it, there was something not right about it, something, or somethings, missing.  I didn’t know what.

When I woke up this morning I knew what to do, kind of.  So, after searching through my stash of bits and bobs, I sorted it.

I think it is now finished, apart from some shadows around the cogs which I can’t do until the glue has set.

Much happier with it now.

Finished art

angela-porter-3-january-2017

This is now finished!  It’s taken a lot of time over the past few days, but I’m happy with it now.

It’s been completed on A3 mixed media paper using a variety of media.  Details have been added using coloured pencils and iridescent/metallic paints, hence the shimmery, shiny spot to the left.  These details are a nightmare to photograph, but hopefully you’ll get enough of an idea from what you can see in the image.

Adding the iridescent patterns was a bit like using ithildin; I had to have the light at the right angle so I could see what I was doing and that also involved me cricking my neck at awkward angles!

My only problem now is to put a price on my work to sell it; so any sensible help/advice would be greatly recieved!  Oh, I also need to find a name for it too…

Let It Grow – Coloured

Let It Grow Coloured © Angela Porter 2013

Approx. 15cm x 20cm (6″ x 8″).  Rotring Rapidograph pens on cartridge paper with watercolours, metallic inks and paints applied.  It’s rather sparkly/glittery … which the camera doesn’t really pick up.

I own the copyright to this image and it may not be used or altered in any way without my written permission.

Greetings Cards

I’ve been doing teeny-tiny bits of art to turn into greetings cards.  Each card is 4″ x 3″ and the artwork is created using a variety of different media, including metallic pencils, coloured pencils, metallic and iridescent paints, metallic and glitter gel pens, Sakura glaze pens and fine-point technical drawing pens with black ink.

I’ve really enjoyed creating these; they’re relatively quick for me to create, though each one takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes to create, believe it or not!  It’s also nice to create little bits of art that are more affordable.  Perfect for framing after receipt of them as a keepsake.

My swirly, curvy, spiralling style of abstract art is very much featured in these little creations, as is my love of colour.  The inner raven has been kept happy by the use of metallic, iridescent, shimmering colours and highlights.

All the cards are for sale on Etsy.

I’m going to be creating more this afternoon I think.
