Wednesday Wisdom

Angela Porter 18 April 2018

What does research mean for you?

For me, it’s trying out new materials, new methods, new styles of drawing, colouring, lettering, using my art in different ways, most recently that includes Bullet Journals (BuJo) and these little quote illustrations.

It’s looking at how other artists and illustrators work and letting what I see spark creativity in me, not to copy them, but to inspire myself to broaden my artistic ‘vocabulary’, to try those new things that develop my skills, to still do things in my own way but adding techniques to my toolbox of artistic expression.

This quote is also a work in progress, I’ve yet to work out what to do with the entangled drawing at the bottom – to leave it as it is in plain black, to add shading, to add colour.  At the moment I don’t know what to do with it, but I suspect it will come to me eventually.

Talking of work in progress wednesday, it’s the day the members over at the facebook group ‘Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans’ share their wip’s.  Why not pop along and join in? They’re lovely people, very friendly.

It’s Friday!

Angela Porter 6 April 2018 colouredFriday means it’s #dangleday, #freebiefriday #fridayfreebie and #furbabyfriday all over the web!

I’ve designed the dangle to the left for #dangleday.  I will also be putting an uncoloured version of it on my facebookpage – Angela Porter Illustrator – for you to download and colour for free.  So that makes it a #fridayfreebie.  It’s also great for getting into that #weekendvibes going – nothing like a bit of creativity to relax you after a busy week.

I’ve left the banner blank so you can add your own message.

Perfect for a bullet journal (BuJo) cover page.  Lovely turned into a greetings card.

Make sure you print it out to the size you need; the image is sized to fit on an A5 BuJo page, but it will print out cleanly to A4 (US letter) sized paper.

All I ask is that you don’t share the uncoloured image, but feel free to share the coloured image stating where you got it from. Also, the template is not for resale either in it’s uncoloured or coloured form; it’s for personal use only, though you can give the finished project away as a gift if you wish.

I’d love to see how you use the template, so please share on my facebook page.  You can also tag me on Instagram as @angelaporterillustrator or on Twitter as @wyrdsmithing.  On facebook you can tag me either as #angelaporter.

Don’t forget, my new book ‘A Dangle A Day’ is available to preorder.

It’s also #furbabyfriday over on the facebook group Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans, and I love to see everyone’s furbabies!  I don’t know if I’ll manage to get my very camera shy kitty to allow me to snap a pic of him…

Update…

23 January 2018 Angela Porter

I’ve been busy with work for a book, so my focus has been on that of late.

On the facebook group ‘Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans’ a new ‘free’ template will be available on Thursday 25 January, which is St Dwynwen’s Day in Wales.  St Dywnwen is the Welsh equivalent, kind of, to St Valentine, so the template with have that kind of theme to it.  If you fancy colouring it, head over to the group!  The template will be exclusive to group members.

The image above is something I wanted to try out, and I’m kind of pleased with it.  Drawn and coloured in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro using my Surface Pen on my Microsoft Surface Book.  Hand drawn though in a digital environment.

Repeating pattern

Tile11 onelayer Angela Porter small and watermarked

Oh, I’m having so much fun creating repeating patterns!  There is something inside me that loves geometry and symmetry and messing around with dimension, and it gives me a bit of a creative break from the contract work I have at the moment.  Not that I’m not enjoying that, ‘cos I am, but sometimes it’s nice to do something a bit different.

I used one of my entangled drawings of late with the Repper program, GiMP and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro along with my Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Pen to create this.

The colours came from this months color palette challenge over on the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group, though I added the teal green into the palette.

WIP Wednesday

WIP 27 Dec 2017 Angela Porter

It’s WIP Wednesday once again over at the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group. This is my current work in progress. I think I’m in touch with my inner bohemian/hippy once again in my colour choices, or maybe I just need a break from all the Christmassy/Winter colour schemes.  Perhaps I just need some bright colour in my life at the moment.  I do know using bright, vibrant colours always makes me smile.

WIP Wednesday and a new book available in the Colorist App

winter_01_coloured_Angela Porter1

It’s that day again – WIP Wednesday – in the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group.

So, here is my work in progress, an icy patterned mandala.

This mandala is one of ten templates available in my latest book in the Colorist App from Faction Apps,

I’m using the template as an opportunity to learn more about Autodesk Sketchbook Pro on my Microsoft Surface Book, in particular working with the different kind of layers and how I can add patterns to the coloured sections.  This mandala is going to be great for that as the sections are quite large.

Doodleworlds – a coloured template.

AngelaPorter_Doodleworlds_Coloured_01

This is the finished Doodleworlds template that was started a couple or so days ago.

I needed a quiet day or two and colouring seemed to be the way to go, and it gave me a chance to work more with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and my Microsoft Surface Pen and Surface Book.

There’s a facebook group dedicated to my colouring books – Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans

WIP Wednesday

AngelaPorter_Doodleworlds_WIP12Dec17

It’s WIP (work in progress) Wednesday over in the Angela Porter Coloring Books Fans facebook group.  This is one of my current ones.  It’s from my Doodleworlds book, available on Amazon, and a pdf version is available from my Etsy shop, Artwyrd.

I’ve been laid a tad low with some kind of cold, and I’m still not right today; it’s been  a week or so now.  So, my arty output has been curtailed somewhat, but it’s beginning to ramp up a tad now.

Colouring done using my Surface Pen using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro on my Microsoft Surface Book.  I’m using various brushes for the design elements, but have used a gradient fill for the skies.

WIP Wednesday on Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group

christmas2017_01_AngelaPorterColoured1

Wednesdays are WIP Days over on the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group.

Today, as part of my December/Advent gifts, I created this Christmas themed mandala for them to colour in.

If you’d like to colour this one in, then pop over to the facebook group, join and download and print the template for your own personal use – no selling, sharing and so on, either uncoloured or coloured!  Don’t forget, the group members, and myself, love to see how you bring the template to life with colour!

I used my Microsoft Surface pen to draw the mandala on my Microsoft Surface book in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.  I then used the same tools to colour the mandala.

Doodleworlds – now available on Amazon.com!

That’s right, Doodleworlds, the colouring book, is now available on Amazon.com as well as the other Amazon websites, so now all the lovely, wonderful colourists who love my work can join in with the fun of this book!
