Doodling around in a new sketchbook

It’s been a funny old day. A load of deliveries were scheduled today. I’d woken way too early, and by the time I’d drifted back to sleep, well it was time to get up ready for the Abel & Cole delivery, which didn’t arrive until after 11am. If only I’d known, I could’ve had a couple hours more sleep! Ho-hum.

Still, I pottered around with different colours on yesterday’s ‘Give Peace A Chance’ drawing, as well as adding colours to some other drawings.

Finally, all my deliveries had arrived, the last one being my order from CultPens, which included a pair of D&S A5 landscape Hahnemuhle sketchbooks. So I just had to try one out.

The paper is quite thick, has some tooth to it, but not too much. You can very, very faintly see the pen drawing through the paper, but that’s not a problem at all. And adding some tinted charcoal to the drawing was a pleasure as it was gently eased into the paper fibres by the careful use of a paper stump.

I’ve tried some Graphitint pencils and a damp brush to see if that would be ok on the paper. So far so good!

So, I’m quite happy with the sketchbook paper.

This page is just a kind of doodleart that I’m exploring, along with working with alcohol markers and trying to understand how I can best work with them.

All these ‘doodles’ turned out kind of organic in a kind of mechanical way, possibly. I’ll be turning my attention to them again this evening.

It’s that time of the week again! Template Thursyay is here once more! Yay indeed!

This week it’s a mandala design. I love mandalas and like to put my own twist and style on them. This one is no exception. Typically ‘Angela’ or ‘Entangled’ in feel.

The template is available to members of Angela Porter’s Colouring Book Fans Facebook group.

Slowly, I’m learning about using colour digitally, and I love it! I’m beginning to understand how I can use layers effectively. Bringing dimension to my ‘flat’ pen drawings is so fascinating!

I realise now that I need to spend more time working with colour digitally. I’m finding getting that feeling of volume in my artwork is relatively easy. But, choosing colours isn’t my best skill for sure! So, once the process of layers is incorporated into my mental “muscle memory”, I need to learn more about how to choose colours.

I’ll get there. It may be that monochrome is the way to go for me. But only time will tell.

For now, I need a bit of a break from the computer as well as another mug of tea!

Template Thursday…On a Wednesday?

Wednesday is the day I design this week’s template for the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group and give a sneak peek at what tomorrow will bring!

This week I really felt the need to draw a mandala, so I did! It’s a very abstract kind of design, and I’ve chosen to use terracotta as a background for my version. So, to go with terracotta and other warm, earthy tones, I had to pop in blues and teals. I wonder how others will add colour to this one.

Fragments of Your Imagination Challenge 2022, Day 19

Today’s fragment is called ‘An Ode to Triangles’. I didn’t quite have many ideas what I could do with this one.

I quickly realised I preferred to leave the little triangles in the corners out. Between following ideas I got as I was drawing and mis-strokes of the pen, I eventually got a variation I liked. A bit too much as I became focused on just that variation.

But just as I was about to stop the recording, another idea came to me and I went with that on the smaller piece of paper.

Pattern Explorations – Borders 1

The page of Eetings is complete, for now, so time to start looking at some new patterns!

My next page is going to be filled with border patterns. You can see I’ve used many border patterns in the work in progress. Quite a few are found in Romanesque architecture, or Early Celtic art.

As I use arched border patterns a lot in my art, I thought it would be nice to show how I draw them in my next series of pattern explorations.

So that is what I did in today’s video.

I don’t know what’s up with me today, but I’m more scatter-brained and wittery than usual.

In the video, I show how I’ve added colour to more, but not all, of the Eetings.

Day 3 and the first page of my Pattern Exploration sketchbook is about half full.

I’ve used Carbothello pastel pencils with both a water-brush and tortillon to add colour to some of the elements on this page.

Thoughts, ideas about how to embellish the individual motifs on the page are starting to wander through my head.

Of course, I filmed this mornings half-hour of art and here’s the video on YouTube:

Saturday morning is the time I look back on my art this week.

I’d like to say thank you to all who’ve subscribed to my little arty corner of YouTube, as well as those of you lovely people who have liked my videos and left such lovely comments. You are all very, very much appreciated.

Tomorrow, I will take a look back at the whole of Inktober Tangles 2021 in another video. And think about how to go forward now too.
