Doodleworlds – A5 Illustration WIP

Adding colour digitally lets me try things

I’ve learned a new ‘trick’! New to me that is. I’ve finally worked out how I can use grey shadow underpainting to increase contrast in my artwork! It’s new to me, but not new to the art world I’m sure.

I’m really happy with the result. Digital art makes it so easy to try things out in layers. So, this is the way for me to go.

Yesterday morning, I started adding shadows to some pen drawn motifs with marker pens. I wanted to see what that would look like. I prefer these shadows to those done with graphite or chalk pastel pencils.

Then, I added colour using watercolour pencils and a damp brush, just to see what would happen. I liked the result! Lots!

I filmed part of this process today, and here’s the video on YouTube

Doodleworlds Critters – Part 2, partly coloured

Have you ever lost hours engrossed in an activity? It happens often, doesn’t it? This afternoon, I’ve lost seven or eight hours adding colour to this Doodleworlds drawing. Yet, contentment oozed out of every pore of me.

I think I’ve finally found the perfect digital brushes during this time. That made adding colour such an enjoyable and engrossing activity today. So much so, that I kept saying to myself, “Just one more,” or, This one will be the last.”

I think I’ve only come to a stop for now as I need some food and drink. Also, I really need to get my Welsh Lesson done on Duolingo.

I had planned to pop out this afternoon, but I got so lost in art the afternoon has flown by!

The bonus is that not only have I enjoyed this time, but I’m pretty pleased with what has been produced. I’m even considering that it may be time to find a good cause to gift a lot of my traditional media to. I’ve not quite decided on that step yet.

I tried adding colour to this drawing yesterday, using traditional media. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed with what I produced that I re-drew the picture. Yup, I forgot to scan the partly drawn version in. Ho-hum.

I feel I’m OK adding shadow to my drawings with chalk pastel pencils. But adding colour with traditional media…

So, I’ll sit with this decision, focus on drawing with pen and adding colour digitally. In most cases that is.

Draw with me… Doodleworlds Critters Part 2

Yet more cute, whimsical and kawaii Doodleworlds critters! I draw them step by step in today’s video, which carries on from yesterday’s.

These are a lot of fun to draw, so much so I drew a Doodleworlds coloring page yesterday. It needs a bit of editing and tidying up, but I’ll make it available to purchase in my Etsy shop soon.

Draw With Me … Doodleworlds Critters (Part 1)

Yesterday, my YouTube video tutorial was about drawing the botanical, zentangle patterns and other motifs in this week’s colouring page.

In today’s video, I focus on the cute, if somewhat unruly, Doodleworlds critters. There’s so many of them that this is the first part! Then, there’s adding colour to the design.

I had a lot of fun filming this tutorial. There is a kind of narrative with the Doodleworlds characters. I’m definitely looking forward to part 2!

Template Thursday … on a Wednesday?

A sneak peek of this week’s template for the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group members. And it’s another Doodleworlds style template.

I have a video on youtube, catching up with the last few days’ art as well as starting to colour this template with chalk pastel pencils. Disaster struck as I continued after the video, so turned to digital colouring.

The template will be available in the facebook group tomorrow. Now, I need to take a nap as I really haven’t had enough sleep the past three nights and I’m barely keeping my eyes open.

April’s Color Palette Challenge!

Over on the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group, we have a monthly color palette challenge. April’s was a pastel rainbow colour palette which went beautifully with the cute, whimsical, kawaii, Doodleworlds coloring template.

This is my finished version. I drew the template on paper with a pen of some description (I can’t remember now!). Then, I’ve added colour to the template digitally.

I’m looking forward to see how people have coloured either this or another template from one of my coloring books using this month’s color palette.

I now have a week to work out what the next one will be!

April’s Color Palette Challenge is nearly over…

At the start of each month, there’s a color palette challenge for the members of the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group. The palette can either be used with the first template of the month, or any template from any of my numerous coloring books.

I’ve been adding colour to the 01 April 2021 template, and my image today is of a part of that template. It’s all cute, doodly, kawaii and the colour palette is a pastel rainbow. Not colours I’d choose nowadays, but it goes with the cuteness of the template.

Template Thursday

And a new colour palette challenge too!

Not only is it Thursday but it’s also a new month and also April Fools’ Day.

I needed to draw some cute kawaii goodness the other day, and as the characters are fooling around in the template I thought it would be perfect for this week’s template.

Unusually for me, I’ve gone with a cute pastel rainbow color palette for the month long color palette challenge.

The template, and the color palette challenge, are via the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group. Free to join, free to download and join in, all that I ask is that you follow the terms and conditions of use.

I loved seeing everyone’s coloured version of last month’s colour palette challenge and template on the group. So much fun, and so many different ways of using the same few colours to bring life to the lineart template.
