A Gracious Plenty of Fragments | Fragments of Your Imagination Challenge 2022, day 22
Today, I chose to look at fourteen of the twenty-four extra fragments included in the 7F5RChallenge facebook group’s #FYIC2022 challenge information. The fragment for today – Dewdrop or Gem – really didn’t inspire me, as lovely as they are.
So, instead I looked at many fragments, sticking to the original shape for the variations.
Three pages later … I had a large number of variations, and a start for each of the fragments I took a look at using other shapes or further variations.
A lovely, lovely way to spend a dully, grey, chilly Saturday morning. Well, that’s what the weather is like with me here in the Valleys of South Wales, UK!

Template Thursyay! and “Ivily” for day 20 of #IFYC2022
Template Thursyay!
I added some more colour to my version of this week’s coloring template (or coloring page if you prefer) for the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group.
I stuck to a fairly limited palette of blues and teals, oranges and terracotas for this one.
I wasn’t aware until I added colour of the circular objects trapped beneath the triangles! It never ceases to amaze me now colour can bring out unexpected structures in a mandala or zentangle style design.
“Ivily” by Debbie New CZT – Day 20 #FYIC2022
Part of me wants to call this fragment ‘evilly’ because I was really, really vexed and frustrated by the original fragment. I just couldn’t get my head around it.
Don’t get me wrong, the fragment is lovely, but I just couldn’t work out how to draw it. It took me ages and ages of looking and working with it to even to be able to see the ivy leaves!
That’s all to do with how my mind works, nothing to do with Debbie’s beautiful fragment.
Eventually, I decided to cut my losses and just see how I could put ivy leaf motifs a la Angela into fragment shapes. That was a bit more of a fruitful journey with some unexpected results for sure.
Once my head is clear of my vexations, I may very well return to this fragment to see what I can do then.

Template Thursday on a Wednesday and Day 19 of the #FYIC2022 challenge.
Template Thursday…On a Wednesday?
Wednesday is the day I design this week’s template for the Angela Porter’s Coloring Book Fans facebook group and give a sneak peek at what tomorrow will bring!
This week I really felt the need to draw a mandala, so I did! It’s a very abstract kind of design, and I’ve chosen to use terracotta as a background for my version. So, to go with terracotta and other warm, earthy tones, I had to pop in blues and teals. I wonder how others will add colour to this one.
Fragments of Your Imagination Challenge 2022, Day 19
Today’s fragment is called ‘An Ode to Triangles’. I didn’t quite have many ideas what I could do with this one.
I quickly realised I preferred to leave the little triangles in the corners out. Between following ideas I got as I was drawing and mis-strokes of the pen, I eventually got a variation I liked. A bit too much as I became focused on just that variation.
But just as I was about to stop the recording, another idea came to me and I went with that on the smaller piece of paper.

“Moonberry” tangle fragment for day 18 of the Fragments of Your Imagination Challenge, #FYIC2022
This is a lovely fragment, just like a blueberry! I enjoyed my morning arty wanderings, coddiwomple if you will, with this tangle as my starting point. It certainly led down some unusual paths that include flowers and seed pods, barnacles and sea anemones, borders and bling, and even a cupcake!

My work for Adorable Dogs, my latest coloring book for Creative Haven, is now finished. I’ll soon have to design the cover for the next book. But until then I’ll take a little time out to explore some things and maybe put together a book of mandalas.
But not today. Having to download all of the invoices from Amazon for the 2020-21 tax year, my mind is well and truly fried for a while! Anything to do with accounts tends to stress me out just a tad. Still, it’s done now. And I need to take some time to destress. Art is one way for me to do this. Art for calming, meditation, de-stressing. Just what I need. And another mug of tea!

Fragment “Birthday” by Jessica Davies CZT, #FYIC2022, #7F5RChallenge
A fragment that I’m not familiar with today. It’s called ‘Birthday’ and is by Jessica Davies CZT. It’s a fusion of two other tangle patterns – cuboid and bales. The resutl is a rather interesting fragment.
I enjoyed my morning arty coddiwomple; this fragment took me down some unusual paths. Sometimes the fragment variation that resulted was pleasing, at others not so.
I think I learn far more than the not so pleasing variations (especially the downright ugly ones). Searching these fragments for that glimmer of an idea that can be worked with can be very satisfying, illuminating and lead to new variations.
However, this search often needs to be done after some time has been spent away from the variations. Fresh eyes, rested mind are needed to recognise those glimmers once time has allowed the the ‘what on earth was I thinking’ thoughts and emotions to fade away.

Fragment C14, Day 15 #FYIC2022

Another coddiwomple on a page in my sketchbook today. The aim to fill a sketchbook page with variations of Fragment C14, though I have no idea of what that would look like.
C14 is a curious fragment. Actually, all the fragments so far have been curious ones in different ways. My usual approach to creating variations is to work out what are the essential features of the fragment, then do my best to keep the essence of these present.
For me, the curvy dividing line is what defines this tangle, and so that is what I worked with…mostly.
Some surprising twists and turns along the way, some rather tangled, and fruitless dead ends too. Yet even with them there is something to learn.
Creating shadow and highlight brought the fragments alive and gave the illusion of volume.
These daily arty coddiwomples are adding ideas to the store of patterns, variations and understading in my subconscious storehouse of such treasures. They’re also increasing my confidence in creating variations, which is spilling over into my other drawings.
I have no idea what impact all of this will have on my artistic style, but it can only be a positive one for sure.

Busy morning with art!
I’m absolutely exhausted as I type this. I didn’t have much sleep last night and I’ve been awake since before 4am, mostly drawing. I’m hoping a delivery arrives soon so I can get a couple of hours of sleep before getting back to work. I also hope my blog today makes some kind of sense.
Fragments of Your Imagination Challenge – Dealys by Debbie New CZT
Today is day 12 of this challenge and the tangle pattern fragment is ‘Dealys’ by Debbie New CZT. I have a link to her blog in the side bar.
This is an unfamiliar tangle to me. So it took me a little while to work out how best to create variations. My exhaustion interfered with this, however. Once I’ve slept some, I may return to it.

The second image at the top of today’s blog is the customary sneak peek at tomorrow’s coloring template for the Angela Porter’s Coloring Books Fans facebook group.
As I drew this in the wee small hours of this morning, sleep deprived, I think I’ve done a good enough job. It’s a Doodleworlds style illustration, full of whimsy and cuteness. It made me smile as I drew it. Adding colour has improved my perception of the drawing too.
